Birds and Windows

Specifically, Tennessee Warblers.

I saw my first ever Tennessee Warbler the other day, dead beneath one of our windows.  It must have flown into it thinking it wasn't there.  We started using blinds on the windows -- new as of two or three years ago -- after birds started hitting them.  The blinds have worked well, but were up the other day.  Then, on Saturday, a neighbour asked if we could help her capture an injured bird.  It was another Tennessee Warbler that had hit her window.  I caught it, and he seemed to be doing well.  We were going to keep it until Sunday evening when someone would come by and bring him to the vet.  Sadly, he died before she came.  The odd thing was that he seemed healthy but for his broken or dislocated wing.

Though Peterson's says that these birds should be here, we're only just in its range, and as I haven't seen one before, I wonder if these aren't migrants, and I wonder if they might be starting their migration early.  Or, they're usually in the bush, and some have come out of the bush.  We are having very dry weather, and this seems to be the case across the Lake, too.

I find it a very sad thing to have to bury a small bird.
