This is a suite in three very different movements.  The first is evocative of a troubled Europe in the days before the Second World War, and was originally meant as the overture to a cantata for minimal instrumental and choral forces.  The second movement is a brief, tranquil respite from the first movement, and  precedes a lively, Cuban-influenced final movement.
